Going Strait exhibition
At the Roslyn Oxley9 Gallery, Destiny Deacon’s exhibition Going Strait expresses a recent trend in the artist’s work. Composed of the artist’s family portrait, the framed pictures installation covers one of the wall of the gallery.
This frame arrangement shares formal affinities with Flemish altarpieces of the Renaissance, these detailed artworks composed of multiple scenic. Like in the Ghent Altarpiece by the Van Eyck brothers, the main image reveals a central scene whereas the standing figures are situated at the edges. When the 14th century painters depicted a symbolic Christian vision of the Passion and the primitive couple Adam and Eve, the contemporary artist uses her family’s picture to materialise the world.
This installation, from the series Frieze Frames, underlines the classical trend in contemporary Aboriginal art and contrasts to the provocative style of Gordon Bennett’s videos. Destiny Deacon used to deal with more openly political issues but this serene work responds for the national representation’s criteria of the next Biennale of Venice.
