33 Exhibition: Three women from Kunawarritji

Opening on Sunday the 25th August at the Fremantle Arts Centre, (FAC) 33 presents a body of work by three women from Kunawarritji (Canning Stock Route Well 33): Nora Wompi, Bugai Whyoulter and Nora Nungabar.

Building upon the success of the exhibition We don’t need a map: a Martu experience of Western Australia at FAC (17 Nov 2012 – 20 Jan 2013), the three women once again join forces in a contemporary celebration of colour and country. Each of the artists shares their stories of the Kunawarritiji area and surrounding regions through their bold and expressive application of paint. Bugai was taught to paint by both Nora Wompi and Nora Nugabar, and the three artists continue to paint together today.

This exhibition coincides with Nora Wompi’s short-listing as a finalist in the WA Indigenous Awards at the Art Gallery of Western Australia. Wompi, as well as Bugai Whyoulter, Nora Nungabar and Nola Taylor, will be in attendance at the Opening of 33 at FAC on Sunday 25th August from 2pm.
