TELSTRA NATIONAL ABORIGINAL & TORRES STRAIT ISLANDER ART AWARDS

In 2013, The Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory celebrates 30 years of the Telstra National Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Art Awards (NATSIAA). The NATSIAA is the nation’s longest-running annual award dedicated to Australian Indigenous artists and their art, and continues to present a diverse variety of artwork to the public, mirroring both tradition and the changing practices in Indigenous art in Australia. This important annual survey of contemporary Indigenous art continues to develop to reflect the new directions and tendencies in Indigenous art. This year the NATSIAA received more than two hundred and thirty entries with a final selection of 77 of the best works for this year’s exhibition.

Here are the winners of the 2013 Telstra National Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Art Awards:

– Telstra Award Winner: Jenni Kemarre Martiniello (Arrernte Language)
Golden Brown Reeds Fish Trap, (hot blown glass, canes).

– Telstra General Painting Award: Mavis Ngallametta (Kugugu Uwanh Language)
Yalgamunken #3, (ochre, charcoal & acrylic on linen).

– Telstra Bark Painting Award: Malaluba Gumana (Miwatj Language)
Dhatam, (ochre on bark).

– Telstra Work on Paper Award: Teho Ropeyarn (Ikya/Creole language)
Apudthama, (vinyl-cut on paper).

– Wandjuk Marika Memorial 3D Award: Rhonda Sharpe (Luritja Language)
They Come From No Where, (soft sculptures, metal & feathers).

– Telstra New Media Award: Raymond Zada
SORRY, (video –media).
