Tony Albert: projecting our future weaves together painted and graphic elements with an immense collection of ‘Aboriginalia’ – a term coined by artist Tony Albert to describe objects such as ashtrays, drink coasters and tea towels that have been decorated with naïve images of Australian Aboriginal people. This provocative and expansive wall installation raises important questions as to how we understand and imagine difference.
Join Albert and curators Hetti Perkins and Barbara Flynn in a lively conversation about his new work for the Gallery’s Contemporary Projects series.
Barbara Flynn is an independent curator and curatorial advisor to the City of Sydney where she has helped develop significant works of public art in Sydney and overseas. She is also the curator at Deloitte where she oversees the New Australian Art exhibition series.
Hetti Perkins is a member of the Eastern Arrernte and Kalkadoon Aboriginal communities and currently resident curator at Bangarra Dance Theatre and creative director for Corroboree, the upcoming Indigenous cultural festival. Previously senior curator of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art at the Art Gallery of NSW, she has curated numerous significant exhibitions of Indigenous art including the recent Australian Indigenous Art Commission at the Musée du quai Branly, Paris.
