Description:
The artist has painted her childhood memories in the community of Hermannsburg.
« Pastor Sam Gross baptised me.
Back then, everyone in the community would gather for worship services. In this way we listened to the older ones sing, and we learnt from them.
Every Monday the men would come to have their names written down, for work. Mr Latz co-ordinated for this. The men did stock work.
Our school teacher was Hilda Wurst. All my family members attended school. We wore any old clothes to go to school in, as we had no uniform. But once they built the new school, they gave us uniforms. Each uniform had a number. Mine was ’55’.
The women worked at that time: as house keepers, milkers of the cows, doing fancy work stitching, making soap, and rubbing salt. Other ladies worked as cooks. They cooked the meals for the school children.
The children used to make a hole in the milk tins, and thread a wire through them. They’d have fun with these handmade toys. »
