A big congratulations to the winner of the 2022 Archibald Prize, Blak Douglas for his portrait of artist Karla Dickens, titled ‘Moby Dickens’, and to Sally Scales, who has been awarded the 2022 Roberts Family Prize for her work ‘Wati Tjakura’.
A five-time Archibald Prize finalist, Blak Douglas is a Sydney-based artist with Dhungatti heritage. Douglas painted his good friend, Wiradjuri woman Karla Dickens for the 101st year of the Archibald Prize, depicting Dickens in the recent floods in her home town of Lismore which devastated her community and her own studio.
Sally Scales said of her work, ‘I am a Pitjantjatjara woman from Pipalyatjara in the far west of the Aṉangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara (APY) Lands. In this work, I am painting Aralya, the ancestral home for my family.’
The Archibald, Wynne and Sulman Prize 2022 exhibition is open at the Art Gallery of New South Wales in Sydney from 14 May until 28 August 2022.
